What ballet can teach us about our businesses

When I saw the title of the article “Life Lessons From A Ballet Dancer” at Forbes.com, I HAD to read it to see what the connection to business could be. And after reading the article (yes, I’ve included the link below — it’s about a 5-10 minute “good” read) I could immediately draw parallels to the lessons small business owners and solopreneurs could benefit from. I’ve pulled out the three lessons the author, Shaun Rein uses, to help you in staying passionate about your business and its success!
Lesson 1 – To achieve greatness you have to work very hard and sacrifice.
It goes without saying, but somehow bears repeating. As a small business owner or solopreneur, you will work hard and make sacrifices; and sure balance is important. However, as the article goes on to point out — if this isn’t your passion, you a want to rethink whether this “dance” is for you!
Lesson 2 – You have to build a great team
No one achieves a 6 or 7 figure business without a team. Whether it’s an employee or employees, assistants, joint venture partners, coach, mentor, etc. you must surround yourslef with the team that helps you to succeed or else be prepared to pick up your “toe shoes” and go home.
Lesson 3: Although money is important, it should never be the main goal, following your passion should be.
In these “interesting” times, we’re seeing “oppoortunities” to get rich quick or start a 6 figure business on a shoestring. If you are following th emoney and not your passion, you’ll soon be off the stge the minute the reviews (usually from your customers) are bad. Following your passion gives you the strength to setp into the spotlight yet another day.
As you can see, I like this article a lot and I hope you too, experience the inspiration of these lessons in each day of your entrepreneurial life! (and I couldn’t help smiling when I read that Rahm Emanuel was a former ballet dancer!)
